THE METACOSA

Although is not really a group, as the artists themselves stressed at their first collective exhibition at the Galleria dell’incisione in Bergamo in 1979, the definition of Metacosa establishes the strong bond of friendship and poetic intentions that over time has united Giuseppe Bartolini, Giuseppe Biagi, Gianfranco Ferroni, Bernardino Luino, Sandro Luporini, Lino Mannocci, Giorgio Tonelli.

The definition was used in several exhibitions, in particular officially in an exhibition curated by the art historian Roberto Tassi in Viareggio in 1983 and, many years after the “dissolution” of the group, in an exhibition that celebrated its history, curated by Philippe Daverio at the Space Oberdan in Milan in 2004, entitled Phenomenology of Metacosa. 7 artists in 1979 in Milan and 25 years after.

Convinced that the way proposed by the avant-garde is now depleted from the expressive language point of view, the artists are united by the intuition that the real challenge of art is to confront themselves again with the content of the work, expressing it through an explicit representation, although never rhetoric or didactic. Subtly disturbing even when it faces apparently everyday and domestic contexts, poetic but always imbued with a clear disenchantment, their research is marked by strongly individual variations and returns a contemporary feeling that is at the same time distressed and perturbing.
